Does anyone else feel like its been a zillion years since we had a good several months in a row of TV. That stupid writers strike really jacked everything up last season. My DVR is chugging away recording all my shows, and since I hosted my girls knit night yesterday I haven't watched any of the Monday shows yet - so bear with me on that. For that matter, bear with me on the Tuesday shows too!

Tonight I watched the season finale of 'Burn Notice'. I love that show! Bruce Campbell cracks me up and I think Gabrielle Anwar is amazing as Fiona. Before this show I didn't really know who Jeffrey Donovan was (although, a friend told me she recently saw a rerun of Crossing Jordan in which he guest starred, so I have to have at least seen him once since I never missed that show.) and I have to say that I think he is really cute and love him in this role. His smile makes me smile and his laugh is music to my ears. His characters Mom and Brother are annoying to me, but I'm pretty sure they are supposed to be. Sharon Gles is really good though ... The guy who plays the brother (Seth Peterson) I've only had exposure to minimally when he was on the old show Providence, and I didn't like his character on that either. Anyhoo - very good season finale I thought. Good cliffhanger and new episodes will be back this winter so we don't have to wait too long to see what happens with Michael Westen and his quest to find out who burned him!

After that I watched last weeks episode of 'Bones'. I just can't get enough of this show! The chemistry between Booth and Brennan is perfection. Dr. Sweets is growing on me week by week, I think he's a good go between for the characters and he is a lot smarter than they give him credit for. I'm very sad that Hodgins and Angela aren't together anymore and I can't say that I'm sad that Zack is gone - he bugged me. I think that Cam is good as the boss, and I hope they don't try to pick back up anything with her and Booth. Ugh. I will admit that I have a little bit of a girl crush on Michaela Conlin. I think she is just simply beautiful. Plus the character of Angela is awesome ... I mean, c'mon ... her dad is one of the ZZ Top dudes! Who doesn't dig that?? I'm looking forward to some great episodes this season, although last weeks topic of dog fighting just tears me up inside and this episode actually had me shedding a few tears.

Other things I'm watching ... 'Fringe' on Fox. Have only watched the pilot so far, but I really liked it. I never watched Dawson's Creek so I don't have this whole thing about Joshua Jackson, well except for the fact that he was on Dawson's Creek and I always thought that show was sorta pansy. Oh well, what do I know - I never even watched it! Ha :) I'm excited to have a new 'X-Files' ish type show on the air again. Hopefully it won't get too into itself and get all snotty and stuff.

I can't say that I'm watching too many new shows this season. I really got burned last season with some fantastic new shows that were pulled. I'm still freaking bitter as all hell about 'Journeyman'. That was an awesome good show with great casting. It's a shame that it didn't get more of a chance to grow the audience. Also, as cheesy as it was i'm not happy that 'Moonlight' is gone. As some of you know, I'm quite the vampire lover. I admit that Mick and Beth were a bit much to handle, but I am addicted to vampires. I wonder if there is a group for that?

One good turn is that 'The Big Bang Theory' is back this season. That show freakin cracks me up! All 4 of the main guys are so great individually and together. Raj killed me when he was walking around with his laptop on a web cam chat with his parents. They were all yelling "Turn us around! We can't see anyone!" I almost fell off the couch. Howard is the biggest nerd ever, lives with his mom and hits on anything with boobs. I think we've all met someone like this in real life and that is what makes him so funny. Sheldon is just beyond words. His lack of social skills makes for constant hilarity and when paired with Leonard - well that's just good TV there people. I'm thrilled that this fantastic show survived the strike. At least they got one thing right.

Oh, well one other new show this season that i'm giving a go is 'True Blood' on HBO. It is based on the Southern Vampire Mystery books by Charlaine Harris. I've been reading the books in anticipation of the show coming out. So far I'm digging it. Now ... it is no Buffy or Angel. And it CERTAINLY is no Twilight Saga. But it is good for entertainment, that is for sure. Plus, as we have already established. Vampires = Me Likey. Heh.

Alright, well I've rambled enough about TV for now. Til next time ...

Give me a sign.

I've been noticing lately a lot of very odd signs as I drive to and fro. Some are hand written, some are professional. It makes me wonder how much people really think about what they are trying to say before they put it down on a sign and show it off to the world.

FedEx Express - Doesn't FedEx stand for Federal Express? So basically this sign (and their trucks as well) say Federal Express Express. Hmmm.

Odd Hours Day Care - If it is odd hours then that probably means it isn't during the day. So why not call it Odd Hours Child Care or, more appropriately, crazy people willing to take your kids into their house.

Pain $35 - I really don't want to pay someone $35 to give me pain. In fact, I don't want to pay anyone any amount of money to give me pain. I might even go so far as to pay someone $35 to NOT hurt me.

Those are just a few that I can remember. I will be jotting down more as I see them. Or ... send me the funny signs that you see and I'll post them!

Fun in the Sun

Today I went to Hawaiian Falls water park with my good friend Heidi and her 2 daughters. We had so much fun. It was a very nice and relaxing day. Heidi and I went on the lazy river and in the wave pool a couple of times and then spent the rest of the time in our cabana. That's right, our own personal cabana. It was awesome! Our own space to sit and put our stuff, no worrying about claiming enough chairs or anything like that. But the best part .... we had our own personal cabana boy! Well in our case it was a girl :) Anything we wanted, she would go get it for us. We had some sno-cones and some beverages. It wasn't blazing hot today even though it was warm and we did catch a few rays off and on. Not to worry though, I still love my pool - but it was nice to get out and about with friends for a day.

And now, our feature presentation.

I love movies. I really do. Not that you would know it by the list of recent movies I have seen. The last movie I saw in the theater was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which was out just about this time last summer. Yep, its been almost a whole year since I have been to a movie theater.

I have several friends who go to the movies every week, sometimes twice a week. They see every movie that comes out, usually the first weekend it is released. I wish I could say I did that. But I don't. I can not tolerate movie theaters anymore. The parking, the lines, the cost - mostly for the snacks and drinks, the crowds, the employees lack of interest, but mostly it is the other viewers with their inability to realize that there are other people in this world sharing space with them. People have made me stop going to the movie theater. I would much rather wait a few months and watch the movie in the comfort and quiet of my own home, on my schedule, with my comfy couch and big screen TV.

All that being said ... Netflix has been fabulous! We had a minor scare there a few weeks ago when they announced they would be taking away profiles (so that different members of a household could have separate queue's of movies, thus not having to juggle the list so that everyone gets a movie in turn). However, this was quickly remedied by the public crying foul. Thank you to Netflix for keeping this incredible feature :)

Recently I watched Premonition with Sandra Bullock. I really enjoyed the premise, very interesting. Sort of a 'Memento' type vibe going on. I didn't really dig the way it ended but that is not stopping me from liking the movie. Next I have Reign Over Me with Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle - who i LOVE. I'm looking forward to this one. I'll let you know how it goes. Some others in my queue are:

Licence to Wed

Definitely, Maybe

Dan in Real Life

27 Dresses

Pirates of the Caribbean, At World's End

Helvetica (a documentary about the font, I know ... I'm a dork)

Because I Said So

Deja Vu

Music and Lyrics

I also enjoy watching TV shows that I never saw when they were on. So I have some of those in my queue as well:

Northern Exposure

House, M.D. (never started this, so I figured I'd go back to the beginning)

Torchwood

The Lost Room (more of a mini-series)

So that is what I will be watching over the next few months. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to entertain them!

On with the show ....

Saturday in the Park .... and the Pool.

Summer is here. This past Saturday the 14th was World Wide Knit in Public Day so several of us from my local yarn shop, Yarns Ewenique, met across the street from the shop in the Veteran's Memorial Park from 9am-12pm to knit in public. Mostly to raise awareness of the craft.

Since it was also Flag Day there was more traffic than I'd originally thought. There must have been some sort of race going on near by because about the time we showed up to start, groups of people were walking by with those numbers pinned to their shirts. I assume they were on their way home after running.

We had about a dozen ladies, most I knew, a couple I didn't, and we sat and knit and chatted. People waved and said hello. One lady pulled up in her car and asked if we were celebrating Flag Day. That was kinda funny. We told her why we were there and she started clapping. Little old ladies are cute that way.

We didn't actually make it all the way until noon. Around 11:30am the breeze turned hot and it just got too icky to sit outside. So, we called it a day and all packed it in. Several of us went back over to the shop to sit in the nice cool air for a while. There was another group we heard about who were supposed to be knitting from 9am to 6pm on the lawn of a local museum near by the yarn shop. The particular lawn they said they would be on has zero shade at all. I wondered if they were going to have those tent type things so they didn't all die of heat stroke. When I drove past on my way home, I saw they were all up next to the museum building under the shade. I was glad to see that.

Later that afternoon I had some friends over to swim at my house. We had a blast! There were about 10 of us and we just laughed and talked and floated all afternoon. We munched on chips and had various and sundry adult beverages. After we were sufficiently pruned up and sun burned, we went inside and ordered pizza for dinner. I had a great time with the girls I already knew pretty well and got to know a few others a lot better. We will definitely do that again soon, such a good time :)

Even though at the end of the day I was dead beat, that was the most fun I've had in a long long while. Thanks to all my good friends who spent the day with me. I love y'all!

Long Time No See Internet ...

Hello everyone! The past few weeks have been a swarm of TV, knitting and PackRat. What is PackRat you might ask? It is a crazy addictive game on Facebook, sort of a trading card game but online. It is ridiculous but so much fun :)

This afternoon I went and got a new nose ring. I've had my nose pierced for 2 months now so it was safe to switch it out. I asked the piercing lady if she would change it out for me. She sort of looked at me a little funny, even though she told me when she pierced it that I could come back and have her change it out for me when it was time. So, I went over and laid down on the table. She took the original one out, it hurt a little bit but not too bad. Then everything changed.

There was a little scar tissue on the inside of my nose right next to the hole and she had a really hard time getting the new ring in. It hurt really bad, worse than getting it pierced in the first place! After what seemed like ages, and several attempts, she finally got the new ring in. I said to her "good thing I didn't try to do it myself huh?" to which she agreed, and was no longer thinking it was silly for me to ask her to change it out for me. Ha!

I got up and left, but all the pain left me really nauseated for quite some time. Very odd. I'm feeling better now though.

I'm ready for Memorial Day on Monday! We are having some people over to swim and cook out. Keep your fingers crossed that it doesn't rain ...

I hope everyone has a great holiday, stay safe!!

I can't believe I haven't mentioned this yet ...

Last Thursday, for the 2nd episode of The Office since we came back from the writer's strike, we had a HORRIBLE storm and although we only lost power for about a minute, the entire evenings television lineup was preempted by the fascinating (yes, i'm exaggerating) weather reporters. So, while I was kept abreast of how large the hail was that was falling in downtown as opposed to out on the west side of town - everyone else not in DFW was watching The Office and laughing.

Luckily, someone on our local NBC station mentioned that if the viewers wanted to catch any shows they were missing during the storm, that you could go to www.hulu.com and watch them for free! Friday morning I woke up all excited and checked out the site, and sure enough ... there it was, the previous nights episode in all its glory. I said "getting ready for work be damned, I'm watching The Office!" And then I did just that.

It was hilariously funny and I loved every second of it. Thanks to Jane McGarry - NBC News Anchor - for saving my Thursday night. I'm forever grateful.

Spring is definitely here

Yesterday I went to the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens with my new camera and a borrowed macro lens (thanks Phillip). Finally.

I am so freakin excited for the return of The Office. It has been excruciating waiting for new episodes to start back up. In honor of that, I wanted to share one of my very favorite quotes from last seasons finale, The Job.

Dwight: Don’t you want to earn Schrute bucks?
Stanley: No. In fact, I’ll give you a billion Stanley nickels if you never talk to me again.
Dwight: What’s the ratio of Stanley nickels to Schrute bucks?
Stanley: The same as the ratio of unicorns to leprechauns.

We last left the Dunder Mifflin crew with Michael pretty much screwing up the deposition for Jan's law suit against the company for wrongful termination. I've read that the episode next week will feature Jim & Pam going over to Michael & Jan's for dinner. THAT is going to be hilarious!

Countdown: 6 days!

Back from vacation

Hello friends! I took the whole week after my birthday off from work and did pretty much nothing. It was fantastic. I lunched with friends, spent a day with my mom, had some spa appointments. All in all, a wonderful week.

But here we are back again, to the grind of work and life.

I am ready to turn the heels on the pair of socks i've currently got on the needles. I'm also attempting to learn a new way to do the top of the leg of socks so I don't have to do the blasted ribbing that I can't stand. More news of that later ...

Next Thursday the 10th, The Office is coming back to TV and I am so freakin excited I can't even tell you. Shows have been trickling back and it has been good - but this, THIS is the one I've been waiting for. I will begin the countdown shortly!

Gonna make it short and sweet today. Ta Ta For Now :)

Happy Almost Birthday to Me!

Tomorrow is my birthday! Yep, Easter. This is the only year in my entire lifetime that my birthday will be on Easter. The last time Easter was on March 23rd was in 1913 and the next time Easter will be on March 23rd is in 2160.

The method of determining when Easter will be is kinda strange. Simplified it is: Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the Spring Equinox. So, this year it all happens really early. Spring Equinox was on the 20th (a Thursday), we had a full moon last night on the 21st (a Friday), and the first Sunday following is tomorrow - the 23rd.

I'm not really all that jazzed to share my birthday with Easter this year. Mostly because Easter is all about families doing things like church or egg hunts or Easter bunnies. Plus a lot of places are closed on Easter - it just complicates things. So, I decided to have a big celebration yesterday!

We had a short work day, got to leave at 3pm - being Good Friday and all - so I headed over to a place called Gloria's (Mexican Food, yum!) for a Happy Birthday to Me happy hour with a bunch of friends. There were about 15 or so people there off and on, and I had a blast! I had 1 or 2 (ok, more like 6) Mango Margaritas - wow they were good - and laughed A LOT. I have really great friends :) After it died down a little, 6 of us went to eat at Kincaid's, a famous local burger joint. They have the BEST fried okra ever! Of course I had some ...

After the drinking and the eating, hubby and I went home for a sec to check on the kitties and then we went to a shop near our house and I got my nose pierced! I'd been wanting to for a while, pondering and researching. I finally decided to go for it. It hurt for a second or two, my eyes watered (even though I had them closed like I was supposed to), and unlike your ears - it bleeds a bit when you get your nose pierced. Not horrible or anything, I'd just never thought about that. The lady doing the piercing did warn me though, so I didn't freak out. It's a little tender now and it looks like my nose is a tad swollen but not freakish or anything :).

All of this and its not even my birthday yet! Today I'm going with my friend Debora to a sewing shop to look at sewing machines. That will be my birthday present to myself. I'm quite excited about it. I have lots of ideas of things I would like to make. After that I'll head over to my local yarn shop to hang out and knit. I'm already working on my next pair of socks of course! And I'm also using the left over yarn from the 2 pairs of socks that I've finished to make some socks for my iPod, ha! I'm taking all of next week off for vacation, lots of relaxing and hanging out with a little bit of household chores thrown in.

That's about all for now .... stay tuned for more updates as they happen :)

New Socks!

I just finished my 2nd pair of socks a few hours ago :) I'm very excited as I feel like I've been working on these forever.

I had started this pair back before Thanksgiving (I think) and was going along pretty nicely and then they just flat out disappeared. So I re-bought the yarn and started over.

I knitted them consecutively so that when I was done I was done! I didn't like doing one and not having its pair even started. I think I will, whenever able, do all my socks in this manner.

I have a couple of other pairs started, so stay tuned ....

Blog Update

I'm sure nobody noticed, at least while I was working on it :) but I just widened the main column of the blog so that I can post bigger pictures. Sorry bout that ...

I've had quite the crazy past 2 weeks. I am not typically an overly busy person. So last week when I had 2 doctor's appointments, a nail appointment, people coming to switch us from dsl/satellite to cable - and of course brought the wrong equipment so they had to come back another day, a whole lot of work because of a big site update, my regular sit & knit and then a vacation day on friday I thought I was doing pretty good since I hadn't had a complete breakdown by the end of it all.

That's what I get for trying to be a busy person.

I was gone all weekend with my friends on a knitting retreat. It was a blast, but not a lot of sleep was had :). Monday morning I had to be at work by 6:45 for said site update. I got there and everything went fine ... until about 10am when I started falling asleep at my desk. I was going to be leaving at noon anyway because of a dentist appointment, so I left early and went home to nap for a bit before getting my teeth cleaned. Then Tuesday was voting day here in Texas, so after work I headed over to vote - which took an hour! There were so many people there ... after that I went out to dinner with the hubby to celebrate his accomplishment of getting A+ certified. I woke up at 2am on Wednesday with the most horrible sore throat ever. So I stayed home from work and rested. Yesterday I got up and went to work ... a little kooky from Sudafed, but alright. THEN IT STARTED SNOWING. Actual snow. Huge flakes. So we left work at 3:30pm.

Now it is Friday and there is still snow on the ground, but the roads don't seem to be too bad. I'm about to head in for hopefully (well not really) a full day of work. On the opposite end of the spectrum, it is supposed to hit almost 70 this weekend. No wonder I've been feeling sick.

I think I've learned my lesson about trying to do too much. I'm going back to my quiet life now.

p.s. 15 days til my birthday!

Hello, My Name Is _________

I do not like it at all when certain words are shortened. The 2 biggies that come to mind are "meds" for medicine or medication and "tat/tats" for tattoo/tattoos. I'm not really sure where my dislike came from for these abbreviations.

I used to REALLY hate it when people called me Deb. However, it wasn't all people. Only when it came from the mouths of people that I had just met that very moment or even near strangers like the teller at the bank.

I will admit that this dislike came from a time when I was working at a place that had several people with variations of the name Deborah. A couple of them preferred to be called Deb and so that translated itself over to me. One of these "Deb" people was a complete bitch and I did not want to be associated with her in the least so I insisted that people call me Debi or Deborah.

I am many years removed from that situation and so it doesn't bother me so much anymore but I prefer that only my friends and/or family refer to me as Deb. It is more of a personal name to me and I don't want just any joe schmo off the street calling me that which is reserved for the people who really know me.

My good friend p|b calls me "Debs" and I love that. It is so appropriate coming from her and it makes me smile when I hear it. My aunt calls me "Debi Doodle" and has since I was a kid so that name has great memories of it. I even have a good friend now calling me that which is awesome. We called my grandfather "Daddybear", so I often greeted him with "Hey DB!" to which he would reply "Hey DD!" (my last name starts with a D as well). For some odd reason it was always sort of said with the tone of Yogi the Bear saying hello to Boo Boo.

My wonderful neighbors across the street always call me "Deborah" which I've never really been called before, even though it is my name. I'm not really sure how that happened, I don't introduce myself that way ... one time I even told them that they could call me Debi if they wanted to but they said that I will always be Deborah to them and so that is what they call me. I love that.

One of my very best friends now is named Debora and the fact that I share a name with such a fabulous person thrills me to no end. Plus its nice to have someone else of my age with the name. There aren't a whole heck of a lot of us out there in our 30's.

Names are a funny thing ... It took me a long time to really LOVE my name. Now I will never change it, it defines who I am in my mind. I'm proud of it and what it means, how my parents discussed and thought about what to name me. It had to be a difficult thing to do. That is a huge responsibility.

Mom, Daddy ... thanks for giving me my name. I appreciate it more than you know. I have begun this project. So far I am through the back left (of the back left, back middle and back right), and am about to start the back middle section. It is fairly simple considering the pattern is 4,000,000 pages long (ok, 3.5 really).

On another note, hubby and I went out on Sunday and took some pictures. It became a little more muggy mid morning, so weird for February. Even in Texas. When I left work at 5:15pm it was COLD. You know, cold for here. So, like 50 and really windy. That's crazy - 30 degree drop!

In other news, I've started crocheting my Sweater Coat - yay! I hope to post pictures soon (when it starts to look like something other than a couple of rows! OK, off to work on it.

Pick a lane, would ya?

Dear Mr. Black Toyota 4-Runner,

I realize you are an Aggie, and that you work at Radio Shack. But really, does that mean you own the road? Because you sure were acting like it this morning. In a span of about 2 blocks you were in 3 different lanes of a 4 lane road. Next time it sure would be nice if you could pay attention to the other drivers around you and pick a lane and stick with it. I'm sorry that people are bothering you by stopping for red lights and pedestrians. And I realize how irksome it is to wait for folks parallel parking in front of the court house and what not. But that doesn't give you the go ahead to zip around people back and forth all willy nilly - even if you do use your blinker - just to get where you are going about 3 seconds before you would have if you'd stayed in the spot you started in.

Thanks,
Ms. Blue Volkswagen Beetle

Cedar Fever

I have Cedar Fever. What is that you ask? It's horrrrrriiiibbbbbbllllleeeeeee allergies! To the Juniper tree here in Texas. I never had allergy problems until about 8 years ago when I moved to Austin from Fort Worth. The Cedar is reallllly bad down there. I thought when I moved back up here it would go away. Yeah, not so much. What does Cedar Fever feel like? Well ... itchy watery eyes, a terribly itchy throat that can't be scratched, large amounts of snot and sneezing like its going out of style. Seriously, I am averaging about 15ish sneezes a day. I'm not usually a multiple sneezer, you know, those people that ALWAYS sneeze 3 times in a row or whatever. That's not typically me. Unless Cedar is involved. I'm pretty much sneezing at least 2 times in a row if not 3 or 4. Lots of fun. And before you even ask, yes. I take allergy medicine. Every day. And no, it doesn't help. I just wanted to share, and let you know that if you are so lucky as to not suffer from Cedar Fever, you should thank the stars every single day.

Really I'm Just Nosey

Today during lunch I went to the local Super Target to wander around. I meandered here and there and got a couple of silly things, like some Sharpie markers and Valentine's Day Peanut M&M's. I went to the checkout and put my things on the counter. A minute or two later, a lady comes up behind me and places her items on the conveyor belt - there was a divider between our things. I'm a pretty nosey person, so I look to see what she is purchasing ...

1 box of clemetines

1 pound of ground beef

2 blue candles

13 cans of fancy feast cat food

1 container of fresh mushrooms

1 bottle of clorox bleach

1 jar of green olives with pimentos stuck in them

Am I the only one who thinks this is an odd combination of things to be buying? I'm sure she has a logical explanation for each thing on the list, and I'm also sure that there have been times when my items have looked odd to other people. I just sat there trying to figure out what she will do with all these items when she gets home.

Like I said, really I'm just nosey.

So much fun!

I just got home from a game night with some girlfriends. We had a blast ... we laughed, ate, played, talked and laughed some more. We went over to my friend Debora's house and joining us was Angel, Amanda and Jenn - so 5 in all. We had pizza and other snacks and played Apples to Apples, Mad Gab, SkipBo and Can't Stop. All great games! I love my friends and so glad I found them.

I'm tired now and going to sleep .... oh yeah, I'm to the heel on my 2nd pair of socks, yay!

Don't be so damned negative all the time, would ya?

I know about the whole "don't blog about work" thing, but I have to this once. Although I can't guarantee it won't happen again. There is this person in my general department that gets on my very last nerve almost constantly. I'm going to refer to this person as 'N'.

N is one of those "one upper" type people, everything that someone says, N has done or experienced or knows something that is more important, more impressive and more exciting than anyone else. N is also a name dropper, and makes a constant point of dropping little comments letting you know that they are in the know about things that you couldn't possibly be involved in. N also rolls its eyes when asked a question that they deem stupid. We have several new people in the department and it takes a while to get acclimated to things in a new job. So, during this time they will ask questions that, to people who have been here for several years, might seem obvious. Most people will answer the question and ask if the questioner needs any assistance ... N will roll its eyes at them and answer in a very exasperated tone and usually say something to the effect of "you really should have known that already." Fortunately for me, I don't have to work very close with N on too regular of a basis, else N might end up at the bottom of Eagle Mountain Lake.

Anyhoo ... that is my rant for today. I will leave you with some random thoughts ...

Wouldn't it be nice if drivers would pay attention to their surroundings while driving?

Breakfast burritos are the best invention I can think of. Eggs, cheese & bacon WRAPPED IN A TORTILLA. Perfection.

The price of gas is ridiculous. I know we all know that, but I just wanted to say it.

I love wearing blue jeans and tennis shoes to work.
